Another stunning book by DK
WOW this book is incredible. Knowledge Encyclopedia of Myths and Legends by DK is another incredible book in the DK collection. It is packed full of information and detailed images and is broken down by continents (Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Within each continent there are regional breakdowns, and then a list of myths and legends within those regions. The book is laid out well and very easy to navigate to subjects or areas of interest. The majority of the ideas or subjects in the book have some kind of picture to accompany it which is really neat. While it's designed for ages 9-12, there is something in here for readers of all ages. It even makes a great coffee table book that is so cool to simply flip through and check out the photos. It is definitely worth the $26 value in my opinion.
Fantastic book for inquisitive children
My kids grew up with a library of DK Knowledge books that were beautifully illustrated and informative. This new DK book, Knowledge Encyclopedia Myths and Legends; Gods, Heroes, & Monsters as you've never seen them before, is no exception. This 12" x 10" hardcover book is filled with well written myths, legends and sacred stories, each accompanied by CGI art or photographs. There is an explanation of what defines myths, legends and sacred stories on the contents page to help children better understand the content that is presented in the book.Each piece of information in this book is geared toward readers 9 years of age and up. The stories are quick reads so should grab the attention of children.This book is a fantastic gift for a child interested in mythology and legends. The quality of the binding and pages feels like the book with last for a very long time.
A Little About A Lot!
If this book from DK were to have a downside, it's that it contains only small tidbits of information about a huge variety of mythical and legendary subjects. Of course, that could be considered a strength also, as it presents a myriad of subjects that even many adults will be unfamiliar with, and can be a springboard for further research on topics of particular interest. But this is a BIG book (over 12" tall and 10" wide), and its 200+ pages are chock-full of fascinating stories and histories, with multiple beautiful full-color images gracing almost every page. It's organized by region, and shares the Creation story from various cultures, giving young learners a sampling of viewpoints from around the globe and throughout history. A massive mythological tome that will see a lot of repeat use, and inspire many imaginations.
Knowledge Encyclopedia - Myths and Legends
This is a beautiful book, as usual from DK. It covers myths from around the world, though it gives European ones a bit more space. I'm most familiar with those myself, and the pages provide a good amount of information. For myths from other regions and counties there's enough to give a high level overview of the most common ones.The one disappointing thing about this book is that it has a curve to the cover. I'm not sure if it's just the copy I got or if it's all of them. I'm going to place it under some heavy books and see if it flattens out.
Just what you would expect with a DK book
We love the DK Knowledge Encyclopedia series. If you've gotten any of the other versions, expect the same quality here. A huge book with gorgeous illustrations on every page, stuffed with a ton of facts. This one is honestly a little more obscure with myths and legends.. many that I've never heard of so it's a little more interesting. Our kids will flip through it at bed time. Would make a great gift, especially if your kids are into this sort of thing.
