4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Tolstoy
A classic Tolstoy novella. A self satisfied man reflects on the emptiness of his life as death approaches. Tolstoy's dislike of the bourgeoisie and regard for the peasant are evident. Short, poignant and beautifully written. It encourages self reflection.I read the Penguin version which comes combined with another short story - Three Deaths.
5.0 out of 5 stars short, gloomy, brutal book about life and death
I really enjoyed taking this to the river and reading it in one sitting. It's a dark little book wrapped up in appropriate black and white design that has Ivan Ilyich questioning why he lived his life the way he did once it begins to slip away from him.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gut-Wrenching
Heartwrenching, brutal, and bleak. Too well crafted a story and too poignant in it's choice of words and statements to ignore. Comes with another short story at the end. You won't be the same for a few days after you finish.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good
Easy to read.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Classic
An excellent short story. It perfectly illustrates the dwindling enlightenment of one man in the face of a destructive force that he has no real control of. Sprinkled with classical Tolstoy pros, it is truly a great piece of literature for those who wish to understand the period, Russia, and the reality of life and death in the eyes of Tolstoy himself.+ The print is of great quality and the simple design makes it smooth to the eye.

Wonderful book
Bought this edition and instantly loved it when it arrived.
Great, as always
Leo Tolstoy is to this day a unique author, who discloses his thoughts in a manner that is extraordinarily. I've seldom seen anyone that has his writing technique.
