5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I bought this for my class of 4/5 year olds as a reference book during our Animal topic. The photographs are stunning and the facts are detailed but in short enough bursts for my children to understand when we share the book together. They have loved looking at the pictures and looking up different animals together. Not a book 5 year olds can read by themselves but simple enough to share with an adult at a level they understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect For A Young Reader's Home Library!

W.T.D. · 17 September 2018

Wanting to begin a home library for a young reader, I looked at DK's 'First Reference' series of books. As I already own a few of their more advanced titles, the high quality production and excellent layout of this book came as no surprise. 'First Animal Encyclopedia' features around 80 full colour double-page spreads (168 pages in total). Each is packed with wonderful photographs and accompanied by small blocks of large print which is perfect for young readers. As all the major areas of the animal kingdom are covered, little readers will discover: big cats, birds of prey, insects, sea creatures and much more. With each page looking like a collage, children not yet able to read the text will still enjoy the multitude of pictures. And, as their reading improves, this Animal Encyclopedia should provide years of enjoyment. Recommended for children aged 5 - 8 years. 5 Stars.Tip: Show your little student the Glossary at the back so they can look up new words. If you found my review helpful, let me know.

A great buy for our 4 year grandson. He spends a lot of time scanning the pictures and reading some words … it is also a great stimulant for discussion with us. Very well laid out with interesting topics.

This a fantastic book for any little ones that love animals (which seems to be all of them). My son is only 2 but he loves this book. Pictures are great and gets us talking about the diversity of species and habitats - I think he has learned a lot! Also great distraction if waiting at the doctors, at a restaurant or in traffic etc!! We take it everywhere

MARAVILLOSO!

M. · 4 March 2021

The media could not be loaded.

Excellent addition to elementary science curriculum

W.K.H.M. · 7 July 2017

This book is such a great addition to a homeschool biology curriculum for 1st graders. My LO constantly wants to get this one off the shelf and just look at it. I chose it over the beautifully illustrated DK Visual Encyclopedia of Animals because of the bite-sized, elementary-appropriate text for each animal. Animals are listed by real family or invented group, such as "small and cunning" or "hoofed mammals." While this encyclopedia won't grow with a child past maybe 5th grade, I could see a child getting to the end of this book with hundreds of memorable 1- or 2-sentence facts about the plethora of wildlife in our beautifully made world. A neat fact listed in the book explains why female nesting game birds are duller in color than males: to camouflage them against the ground when nesting. It was like a lightbulb went off in my 1st grader's brain and got her thinking about all the adaptive mechanisms animals employ to survive. That tidbit is much more interesting than how many meters tall each animal grows, its lifespan, its habitat down to the latitude and longitude, or what animal it purports to descend from. New vocabulary is explained in simple terms that most 1st/2nd graders can read, i.e., "Camouflage: A good way for insects to 'disappear' is to hide among plants. This white orchid mantis is hiding in plants that are the same color as it is. Can you find it?"So impressed! Nice binding, thick paper, crisp, clear graphics and text. Short glossary, but sufficient index and table of contents. There's even trivia at the bottom of each page.
