Concise Oxford Dictionary of Quotations 6/e (Oxford Quick Reference)

Description:

Based on the highly acclaimed seventh edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, this new edition maintains its extensive coverage of literary and historical quotations, and contains completely up-to-date material from today's influential literary and cultural figures. It is the only dictionary of quotations which ensures coverage of the most popular and widely-used quotations by searching the largest ongoing language research programme in the world, the Oxford English Corpus.

Over 1,000 new quotes have been added for this edition, and categories such as Catchphrases, Film Lines, Official Advice, and Political Slogans are included. An easy-to-use keyword index traces quotations and their authors.

This is the most authoritative paperback dictionary of quotations available. Containing over 9,000 quotations from more than 2,300 authors, it is both a fascinating read, and an invaluable general reference tool.

Quotations new to this edition include:

'The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A volume provoking much thought.

D.F. · 17 December 2023

In owning this book, the individual opens up to the many evocative thinkers both past and present. There is nothing uncovered by this wide ranging array of participants. Read, think and learn from the triumphs and tragedies of these notable people!

c. · 17 February 2018

I find a dictionary of quotations is a very necessary reference work, and the Oxford dictionary is of proven value. This is the 6th edition, published in 2010,so it includes modern quotations, such as those from Lennon and McCartney. Indispensable for answering the nagging questions Who said what? The service from Greener Books was fine: the book in arrived in good time and in in good condition.

Excellent reading! Useful and fun!

1.0 out of 5 stars The concise ebook on Kindle is very clunky

D.T.B. · 27 August 2022

The internet is full of misquotations, non-existent quotations and downright lies. I had hoped that the Oxford concise dictionary of quotations (Kindle edition) would provide a quick route to truth and light, but it doesn’t. My (admittedly rather old) kindle regularly seizes up with the OCDoQ, and even employing Kindle on more advanced platforms searching OCDoQ is very clunky. I was interested in the veracity of a Plato quote on leadership, but couldn’t find anything other than a painful and time-consuming process. Perhaps the non-concise, not available on Kindle ODoQ will be the solution, but it’s not something that can be easily referenced and carried in this era of mistruths and misinformation. Yet I do find that it (ODoQ, not OCDoQ) is available online and the quote I seek is there….

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WILL LOCK UP YOUR KINDLE!!!!!!!

M. · 20 November 2017

This book makes my Kindle Oasis 'Lock-Up' Each time I try to search the book using 'go to' The Oasis model Kindle has to be restarted. There is no way of using this book other than reading it from the beginning. The obvious use is to be able to search for quotations that are apt, or of a particular genre. I would say: Dangerous to the Oasis. I WANT MY MONEY BACK. PLEASE TAKE NOTE, THIS BOOK DOESN'T WORK ON KINDLE OASIS. PLEASE TAKE IT OFF AND CREDIT MY ACCOUNT

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book ( but don't quote me!!)

C. · 12 July 2013

Every family should have one. It's a dictionary of clever, informative sayings by the great and the good. Buy one today.

Don't buy

N.V.S. · 11 March 2025

Very small print. Use magnifying glass to read. Not worth for the price.

Endlessly Useful E-Book

T.H. · 1 August 2022

I grew up with older editions of this book. Having it at your fingertips will make you more quotable and interesting, guaranteed! You'll find it more useful than you'd think. A definitive text!

Dictionary of Quotations

8. · 25 August 2020

Unusable, stay away

I.R.G. · 17 March 2019

Do NOT buy until fixed. Kindle version is useless junk -- it hasn't been indexed for Kindle. Imagine using an electronic version the New York phone book without any alphabetization...just scroll page by page until you get there.... Right. And this is OUP? Something foul in Oxford these days.
