'Forceful ... The fundamental thrust of Goodwin's argument is right ... a new centre ground of British politics is being formed - even if both parties have yet to fully comprehend it' The Times

What has caused the recent seismic changes in British politics, including Brexit and a series of populist revolts against the elite? Why did so many people want to overturn the status quo? Where have the Left gone wrong? And what deeper trends are driving these changes?

British politics is coming apart. A country once known for its stability has recently experienced a series of shocking upheavals. Matthew Goodwin, acclaimed political scientist and co-author of
National Populism, shows that the reason is not economic hardship, personalities or dark money. It is a far wider political realignment that will be with us for years to come. An increasingly liberalised, globalised ruling class has lost touch with millions, who found their values ignored, their voices unheard and their virtue denied. Now, this new alliance of voters is set to determine Britain's fate.

Review

A single missile laser-targeted at a careless, feckless ruling elite who have ignored the wants and wills of the vast majority of voters ... The fundamental thrust of Goodwin's argument is right. ... a new centre ground of British politics is being formed - even if both parties have yet to fully comprehend it. -- Sebastian Payne ― The Times

A much-needed corrective. It gives voice to those whose values are scarcely heard or represented by the media ... impassioned and convincing. -- Patrick West ―

Goodwin's central thesis is that the rise of the radical right, the Brexit referendum and Johnson's general election victory of 2019 are expressions of a deeper realignment in UK politics that pits the marginalised white working class, socially conservative older voters and the 'non-graduate majority' against a new elite of university-educated progressives. -- Nick Pearce ―

Well-written and cogently argued ... [Goodwin] understands the broad forces that spurred the surprising changes and tumult in the politics of the West, and he writes about them without villainizing or heroizing ... a crucial one to read. -- Bo Winegard ―

I’m new to this author and whilst not a stranger to non-fiction, I’ve not read many political analysis books before.Having just finished it I can highly recommend it. At just 188 pages long, including Intro and Afterword but deducting the Notes section of references, it is short and sweet. Goodwin manages to pack in a great many sources and evidence in support of his assertions whilst maintaining a very readable style - this isn’t some turgid academic tome but rather is highly accessible to all readers - political academic and lay persons alike.Goodwin’s central argument is focused, and he explores it from many facets, which does inevitably give rise to a certain amount of what feels like repetition but is actually more like a thoroughness and a reluctance to be lazy and draw conclusions not evidence by the text; a sign of a robust academic mind.I note other reviews have lamented Goodwin’s lack of mention of Gen X - as a Xennial myself (micro generation on cusp of Gen X and Millennial) I was ready for this but having read it I didn’t feel neglected by this omission - Goodwin discusses class, generational divide, and many other things in the course of the text but his central focus is the identification of a new frontier of division within British society based on values which does map to generation and class to some extent but not completely, so it is simply not particularly relevant.Whichever side of this new divide you are on - if you voted Leave and/or immigration is your top concern and you can’t understand why those in power don’t get it or if you voted Remain and/or feel that Brexit is evidence of racism within Britain - then you will get much insight out of this book.

Over the past four years I thought I was going mad. Now I know it's not me, it's them, and all the academic footnotes underpin this reality. This book is a cogent assessment of what's happening in politics and culture and a much needed antidote to the brain-melting, logic-defying, academic constructs of the pampered and entitled metropolitan elite. Goodwin's argument holds together well, largely due to his accessible and clear writing style, although the book may have benefited from a slightly closer edit in some sections (this is a minor point, really, and related to elements of repetition). The chapter on Virtue was for me the most engaging and compelling section. If, like me, you woke up one day to find that your perceived intelligent and liberal outlook had suddenly rocketed towards the part of the dial containing labels like 'bigot', 'racist' and 'fascist' then this is a purchase well worth making.

Matthew Goodwin and his book demonstrate with facts something we all know to be true; that those in positions of power are a clique of Oxbridge middle class socialists far removed from the reality of life that 90% of the population live.Matthew proves that point with multiple examples that not only are these elites not interested in the people of this country but many actually despise us!From the BBC to the media and the government, this 10% are deliberately wrecking our country and have contempt for British (especially English) institutions and culture.Matthew shows how most of these institutions have also been infiltrated by these Oxbridge cliques, who are actively dismantling everything that is good about this country.Matthew has written a book that should be in every household across the country. It is a fantastic exposé of the snobbery and contempt that the new elites feel for the 'proles', and are in the process of vandalizing this country once and for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, clear analysis of the ruling elite

This book hooked me from the first page. I am a second generation immigrant from a working class background in London. I am now however a senior manager in a corporate role in the tech sector. So in many ways I have seen both sides of this. I am defintely surrounded by the new elite. And while they are very nice people in the interpersonal sense, they completely fit the mould Goodwin describes. For example, I remember talking politics with the COO once, one of my peers. As I am a mixed-race person I felt he expected me to agree with him when he started sounding off about Brexit and how all 'those stupid people who voted leave didn't know what they were voting for'. He was genuinely astounded when I told him I was a leaver. The distain he holds for people on the other side of the political aisle is staggering. Despite the fact that he is an enourmously successful, very well paid individual he somehow considers himself on the side of the little guy, as an ardent leftie. Even though he openly despises that little guy. It's fascinating.I would thoroughly recommend this excellent book for anyone looking for an insight into the minds of the modern elite and what drives them.

My husband is enjoying the read, I know it has proved very popular. My husband says it is full of common sense theories as to why politics in this country has gone to pot and we are disaffected with politics! It talks about the rise of the silent majority which crosses over between small c Conservatism and blue collar voters, against the current liberal Conservative and Labour parties and their progressive policies. Some will find the book objectionable, but it is based on solid academic research across the UK and USA. My husband's words. It also talks about the system where we switch from two Parties that are now almost indistinguishable. If you are interested in politics, you will probably enjoy the read. My husband has.

B. · 12 February 2024

Terrific book packed with research and citations by a professor, but quite an easy read (none of the invented garbage language and grammar used by so many American professors). The author's analysis of current British politics is remarkably similar to the "populist" movements in most of the West--if by populist you mean that elected officials should actually listen to their voters and institute policies that the vast majority want, and not impose and enforce the pseudo-elite's extreme beliefs while taking every step possible to censor, silence and criminalize the 80%. There are many references to the US. If anything, as the author points out, Britain is not yet as extreme as the US...but its leaders have every intention to catch up.

Genial para conocer la situación actual de UK
