5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic translation, gives another way of looking at this epic poem

Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey is a remarkable achievement. Not only is it the first English version by a woman, but it also captures the beauty, complexity, and diversity of Homer's ancient poem. Wilson uses clear and elegant language, and a rhythmic iambic pentameter that echoes the original Greek meter. She also preserves the number of lines in each book, making her translation faithful to the structure and pace of the original.Wilson's Odyssey is a creative and insightful interpretation. She brings out the nuances and ambiguities of Homer's characters, especially the "complicated" hero Odysseus, who is both a cunning trickster and a suffering wanderer. She also pays attention to the perspectives and voices of the women, slaves, and foreigners in the poem, who are often marginalized or silenced in other translations. She challenges the traditional readings of the poem that glorify violence, patriarchy, and colonialism, and instead highlights the themes of hospitality, justice, and identity. This book will enrich the understanding and appreciation of Homer's masterpiece for modern readers. It is a work of art that deserves to be read and enjoyed by anyone who loves literature, poetry, and adventure. I highly recommend this translation to anyone who wants to experience The Odyssey in a new and refreshing way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and accessible translation

Emily Wilson’s new translation of ‘The Odyssey’ by Homer uses plain language and straightforward sentences to make the epic poem accessible to all readers. The translation is fluid and easy to follow. Not once did I get a whiff of imposter syndrome or feel like the book was ‘not for someone like me’—a feeling I’ve certainly had when reading other, more elevated translations. However, sometimes the choice of word or phrase does feel a little anachronistic. At the beginning of the book, Wilson explains her approach to the translation and also introduces the text. Both are informative, and not only give context to the text and this version of the translation, but also provide a jumping off point for further reading about Homer and The Odyssey. The notes at the end are helpful, too. Each book is summarised and notes are given to explain certain lines.Overall, this is an enjoyable and enlightening read, and it proves that epic poems like ‘The Odyssey’ aren’t only for those who have studied Literature or Classics, but are something that can be appreciated by everyone.⚠️ Slavery, misogyny, gore, violence, torture, detail of injury

5.0 out of 5 stars The Odyssey

Just purchased translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad by E.V. Rieu and, though some of the reviews incline to the slightly negative, I can only disagree. Both books (transitions) are absolutely fine; excellently written so that the prose style emulates the poetry of the originals; extended Introductions, outlining changes made, and why these were needed and considered improvements; and The Iliad, for me the more complex of the two stories (epics), begins each chapter with a hugely helpful, summarised numbered outline of what is to follow, making the reading of the text much more accessible.True, there may be better translations out there. Personally I can’t really say; but for me these two books read beautifully and I’m totally pleased with my purchase and would recommend them to others who wish to get a taste of these wonderful stories in an engaging, readable format.I hope you find my review helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple non-literary review of the odyssey...A great book to buy!

S. · 28 May 2015

I'll be honest, my first experience of the basic story or the odyssey was watching 'Homer's Odyyssey' on the simpsons! But having seen a glimpse of the idea of the story when I was younger I vowed to one day read the real version. I'm glad I did and this penguin version in my opinion is the best way to get to understand the story whether you are into literature or not.The odyssey is a poem and many translators have done excellent jobs of translating the text into English while keeping it a poem. However translating into a poem can not only sometimes lose some of the real story but can also alienate those who would like to know the story but can't deal with an epic poem. This is why this book is so great! The penguin version has been translated into a story, like reading a novel. This makes it incredibly easy to understand the plot and draws you so much more into the story. The language used is also very easy to read and understand. Being a penguin book just like with wordsworth classics these books have little notes, whenever there's something that might not be understood by someone reading it they have added a helpful note, this makes reading it even easier. And when you are done with the story itself there is even to read at, where experts have added information (like the stuff you'd read if you were studying at school). The story itself is very interesting, I won't give anything away and other reviewers have certainly added a lot about this but I will say that if you want to find out about this classic but aren't into the poetry aspect then this penguin version is definitely for you. I'd also recommend the illiad, written in the same format but set earlier, that book is every bit as readable as this one. The only hiccup in the story of the odyssey for me was right at the end. The ending seemed a bit off (the notes explain why) but I did feel a little dissatisfied by the ending, but that's just my personal opinion and doesn't change how great this book is.

Las páginas están cortadas así a propósito, con barbas asemejando a los libros intonso, libros cuyos pliegos no estaban cortados, luego de cortar sus hojas, lo que le da un aire de antigüedad bien elegabte; en inglés se llama deckled edge. La edición es preciosa y la traducción muy buena, según he comparado con otras.

R.M. · 6 September 2025

This modern translation of a great epic pulsates with tension to its bitter bloody end, keeping the reader enthralled. The translation from ancient Greek strips all verbosity and in economical verses moves the story along swiftly, vividly bringing to life the story of Odysseus and the Bronze Age coastal world he lived in. It limns a portrait of Odysseus as a man determined to get home to his beloved wife and kingdom using only his wits, shrewdness, courage and resourcefulness. The last few chapters that culminate in a horrendous bloodbath feature an equally strong, courageous and shrewd Penelope and his son Telemachus.
