Couldn’t love this outstanding book more - a wonderful study of a glorious and unique city. Not one for the suitcase or reading in bed due to its size and weight but I’ve loved reading it so much. Written with knowledge snd intelligence and illustrated throughout - plus maps, family trees and historical building glossary. Fab-u-las.

When one reads its turbulent history, it is amazing that the city has survived at all let alone with all the staggering buildings and art works

5.0 out of 5 stars Continue your love affair with Florence

D. · 16 December 2012

After visiting Florence, I had the same feelings about it that millions of other tourists must have. What is this place really? How did it start? How did they build that? When did that happen? Who was involved? etc.Hibbert appears to have collated all of these questions, and answered them with beautifully written prose, artful incisive comment and a wealth of human interest. I heartily recommend this book to anybody who will or has visited Florence and fallen in love with it.

Florence is a travel through time in the famous Tuscan city. This is good reading for those interested in Italy and Italian art, culture and history. It will give an insight for the next trip or just to satisfy your curiosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good source of knowledge before actually travelling to Florence

M.S. · 7 October 2018

This book might be little bit hard to read because it contains so much details, including dates and names, but I find it extremely valuable in order to understand what you are looking at, when actually in Florence. I definitely enjoyed more my stay!

Entertaining and not dry at all. History of the Medici fascinating.

The book I had ordered, Florence: The biography of a city, was described exactly as the book looks. Used, in good condition with no strong marks other 'defeciencies'

Fabulous book. Many illustrations. Covers history , art , architecture and governance. Thoroughly recommend.

Some Images are in black and white and some in colour

N.B. · 10 July 2023

This makes very little sense to me. If drawings or floor plans are in black and white that is understandable, but some paintings are shown in black and white here while others are in colour. It does not make sense. Maybe I have a faulty copy but it is disappointing

Wonderful

N.B. · 30 March 2014

I chose this rating because this book is the ideal companion on a visit to Florence. Even without visiting Florence, it is a wonderful trip. It's written with ease and affection and just enough detail and it covers all aspects of life through the history of Florence. There's one on Rome which I am reading and loving. This is the way to read and enjoy history.

Storia di Firenze vista da uno scrittore inglese

a.c. · 13 January 2013

Great information about Florence!

J.E. · 3 May 2023

There are tons of travel books, but this one goes beyond just telling you what to visit in Florence. As a matter of fact, it is not really a travel book as much as a history book. Florence has not changed that much in over 500 years and this book is a great way to understand the city and what made it so special. It is the birthplace of the Renaissance and what they were able to accomplish in less than 200 years is astounding. I would highly recommend this book if you are going to visit Florence or if you have an interest in Italy.
