Review
"Rebekah writes in a way that is somehow both world-shakingly profound and beautifully intimate. Her voice is unforgettable in its power to make you feel, question, learn, and grow. There aren't words for how much the world needs this book." — Megan Jayne Crabbe, bestselling author of Body Positive Power
“A disability advocate debuts with a collection offering potent rejoinders to ableism…..A fierce and fabulous revision to entrenched ableist scripts.” — Kirkus Reviews [Starred Review]
"Sitting Pretty is the book I needed years ago as I grappled with my sense of self and my identity as a disabled woman. I put it down while reading only long enough to collect myself each time waves of emotion crashed over me. Rebekah's spunky, self-aware wit, combined with education that never feels didactic, make this book a worthwhile and rewarding read." — Emily Ladau, writer, speaker, and disability rights activist
"Rebekah Taussig's writing is a gift that keeps giving. Her voice is honest, vulnerable and welcoming...It was a joy to read and listen to Rebekah's words. This beautiful book helped me ask questions, open my heart, and remind me to look more closely at the world around me and what small part we can all have in making it a better, more accessible one." — Grace Bonney, founder of Design*Sponge and author of In the Company of Women
"A compelling personal book whose confidential voice leads the reader into the author’s vividly lived world of disability. Smart and funny, [Sitting Pretty] does double duty revealing not only the intimate life of a disabled woman but the flaws of the world around her that seeks to repress and contain her." — Lennard J. Davis, Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of Enforcing Normalcy and My Sense of Silence: Memoirs of a Childhood with Deafness
“An invaluable, eye-opening look at disability from a firsthand perspective.” — Booklist
“Her smart and witty observations about living with disabilities will be enlightening and eye-opening for readers.” — Publishers Weekly
“Reflecting on her journey toward disability advocacy, Rebekah Taussig's memoir in essays will make you rethink everything you've previously believed about disabled people and their lives. Reflecting on Taussig's personal experiences, and on disability representation more broadly, Sitting Pretty is a rare book from a powerful, new voice.” — Bustle
"A groundbreaking and candid memoir" — Shelf Awareness
“Taussig’s narrative style is highly conversational, making it feel like one is chatting with a lifelong friend. Her ability to bring levity to a topic some may find taboo is certain to help spread her message of acceptance and love.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Worldview-changing book that we all need to read
I've got this book both on audio and in kindle format, and I've read AND listened to it because I just couldn't get enough of Rebekah's thoughtful voice. I wish I was a writer just so I could express how much I loved this book. I thought it would be a book about disability - but while it is partly about Rebekah's experience of living and making her place in the world as a disabled person, it also does something revoluationary - it breaks down the imaginary barrier between "disabled" and "non-disabled". It shows how accessibility favours all of us; how adapting to the needs of disabled people (which needs to be done by the way, and isn't done nearly enough - stop using accessible changing rooms and install more ramps please, for starters!) isn't just about rectifying a wrong that exists in the world, it can also take us to a place where we begin creating a world that embraces our diversity, and by supporting the needs of our changing, suffering, ageing bodies, allows all of us to make our contribution to society from our unique perspectives. I don't think I'll ever be able to see media portrayals of disability the same way again. Everybody needs to read this book - it will be in all of my family and friends' Christmas stockings this year. Go read this book, now.
5.0 out of 5 stars Honest perspective on disability
Rebeccas memoir provides an honest perspective on how she experiences the world in a wheelchair. It’s beautifully written and highlights that although in principle adjustments are made to make the world accessible , as yet we fail so beautifully to reach that objective. It made me listen to that disabled perspective and without judgement see the world through her eyes. A really good read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A brave and insightful read, very well written . Well done
Fantastic Boom
As a Disability Studies educator. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read! Accessible enlightening and informative
great point of view
Hard cover version is beautiful and I shared in a book club, the feedbacks was very especially because we don't see how the disable people feel about our unnecessary help. I and very happy with the book and is very inspiring.
Balanced and useful
Great insight into the challenges of any kind of significant disability while also sharing the ways to move beyond able-bodied expectations. Hopeful and realistic.
Raw, Honest, and Hopeful
What a fantastic book! As an able bodied person who loves and shares life with disabled people, I am grateful for this read. Taussig does not beat around the bush when it comes to the very real and visceral challenges people with disabilities navigate in this ablist world. She beautifully challenges the reader to first see the world as it is…vastly diverse in body and ability. Then she challenges us to imagine an accessible future. While I recognize that I am only hearing her experience and every person with a disability is unique, I do sense that this book gives me insight and more capacity to empathize and listen to the people in my life who are disabled. Thank you, Rebekah.
