Cecily Sawyer: How To Be a Spy

Description:

A thrilling, mysterious and very, very funny new adventure from the award-winning author of EINSTEIN THE PENGUIN, with brilliant illustrations from bestseller David Tazzyman.

Cecily Sawyer has spent the evening in the attic, training her pet mouse, Mrs Maple-Syrup – an unusually intelligent mouse, in Cecily’s opinion – when her parents disappear.

Luckily, Cecily is more than ready to investigate such a thing. She has wanted to be a spy her whole life, and has all the spy handbooks, manuals and code-cracking kits a girl could need.

But soon, Cecily discovers several very strange things in her city. She’s not the only spy out there – far from it, in fact. And Mrs Maple-Syrup is not the only unusually intelligent mouse…

Review

'With so many undercover agents vying for attention, the choice can seem daunting – but Cecily Sawyer: How to Be a Spy, a delightful new adventure by Iona Rangeley, shows the detective formula working at its best … Rangeley is a witty, beguiling writer – and what follows is a neatly plotted adventure, in which each clue forms part of a puzzle which the reader can piece together as the narrative rips along.' – The Telegraph

'Whip smart, absolutely hilarious and full of charm.' – Laura Noakes, author of Cosima Unfortunate Steals a Star

'A fabulous book' – Zohra Nabi, author of The Kingdom over the Sea

'A charming and elegant corrective to the notion that 10 year-old girls and mice have no role to play in espionage.' – Luke Jennings, author of Killing Eve

'I firmly recommend this book. A very good start for those who want to join the profession or who just want a good read.' – Sir John Scarlett, former Chief of MI6 (really)

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyful, witty, exciting, zany, nerdy and super cool

V. · 31 August 2025

This is such a life-affirming and joyous book - full of adventure and humour - and also just a little bit Alice in Wonderland. In this superficially realistic world appearances drop away to show increasingly whacky and sinister goings-on that only the sharp observation of a determined child can unravel. I can really recommend this book as a deliriously happy place for slightly nerdy kids of either sex, who long to get to the bottom of things and express their full brainy potential. The codes that run throughout will draw in any child who leans towards science and maths. We gave a copy to just that kind of a boy who doesn't normally care for reading and he consumed it in two days. Cecily is a tough cookie - super cool and self-possessed (well, mostly... it isn't easy when you are an only child whose parents vanish without leaving you enough clean socks). She is also witty, playfully irreverent and wise - the sort of child who you'd absolutely love to be or be friends with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psssst! I was never here...

So pleased it wasn't just me who wanted to be a spy as a kid when they were all male - more female ones now for kids to read about but this is funny and for slightly younger readers (no nasty stuff). And books that teach you how to do stuff are always good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and imaginative read

Such a wonderful read! Cecily is immediately charming, and the mystery is so imaginative and compelling. I’d recommend it to readers of any age!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read

T. · 22 June 2025

This one starts off a bit slow, but that is a useful build-up as we get to know more about Cecily before the mystery kicks off. The writing is done beautifully. The first chapter could be very useful for teaching character description.

Got an early copy. My son has been enjoying it. He's started slipping coded messages under my bedroom door. So I guess that's a good thing?
