Small Garden: Beginner’s guide to designing your garden (Collins Joe Swift Gardening Books)

Description:

Create your own small garden with expert gardener Joe Swift.

Green spaces are the perfect antidote to fast city living. Learn how to create your own small garden with expert gardener Joe Swift’s practical, easy-to-follow advice. From courtyards to rooftops, transform awkward and unexciting spaces with inspirational ideas and solutions.

Whatever you want your green space to look like and be used for, Joe’s no-nonsense approach guides you through issues such as privacy, boundaries and shade, to growing plants in areas with little to no soil.

The wider environmental benefits are significant – helping to reduce pollution and minimise the heat island effect (a result of the hardscape in towns and cities). The plants will increase biodiversity, and many will be an important year-round resource for wildlife.

In this book, Joe covers a vast range of exciting, impactful and innovative ways to stamp your personality on your outdoor space.

He demonstrates how to use paving, boundaries, containers, furniture, water and sculpture to help structure and define, and how to give the starring role to the plants you choose to draw the seasons into our towns and cities.

Bought to help with planting up a new, small garden. It’s an interesting read but once read it’s sadly not a book I’d refer back to. If you have no gardening knowledge at all I’m sure it’s more relevant but I had hoped for more design ideas, plans, etc. What’s there is great but limited.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and diverse guide book

S.n. · 29 March 2022

The book is printed in a compact paperback format, similar in size to novels. The paper used is matte finish and there are loads of colour pictures throughout. These are less shiny and vibrant than glossy pictures, but the format is more sustainable than laminated paper. This is quite a diverse book that includes recommendations for practical gardening such as mulching, composting, collecting leaf mould, and wormeries alongside planting, water features, container gardening, lighting (both mains and solar), boundaries, types of storage, creating privacy, and more.I requested this book, hoping that it will help my middle brother. My brother has just bought his first house. It will be the first time he has had a place with a garden since leaving home (after years of student accommodation, rooms in HMOs, and an overcast ground floor flat without outdoor space at all that was utterly miserable during lockdowns) and the garden of the place he has bought though small is a bit of a blank canvas: it had been a rental property and has a small area of patio next to the house, and then a plain lawn. There are lots of really useful tips in here for inexperienced gardeners: including specialist constraints needed for roof gardens (where weight/load bearing is a consideration!), advice on the different types of compost needed for different container-grown plants, recommendations on specific plants and which soil types are beneficial, and a suggestion I’m taking myself to add a bit of sharp sand to bulb-planting holes in heavy/wet soil to help prevent the bulbs from rotting over winter.I noted with interest a suggestion that black wood stain/paint can be a good look for fences – apparently offering great contrast for green plants. My brother’s fences definitely need a bit of attention, and I have the balance of a can of slate grey wood stain (used to treat dark furniture) so I can save him some money here if he decides this is the way he’d like to go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for anyone with a small garden space - or not so small!

Small Garden: Create your own green space with this expert gardening guide (Collins Gardening)Price at review: £8.19This is another beautiful book in a great series. In this one we are taken through how to create our own small garden spaces, considering all the practical aspects (both architecturally and planting wise) and how to make them work for us.It’s an absolute joy to browse through, gleaning useful information along the way. It’s a bit like a reference book, but with heart, soul, beauty; a bit of humour and a lot of wise advice. As well as inspiration and guidance on layouts and planting for the small garden, this book has great sections on the basics of practical gardening. Eg General planting rules, watering guidelines, mulching, pruning… Repotting, protecting exotic plants over winter etc - these are things the confident gardener would just know, but many of us don’t. And we don’t even know we need to look for it. The great thing about this book (and others in this brilliant series) is that it selects what we non experienced gardeners most need to know, and then presents it in the most accessible and pleasurable way to read.If you look through the “Look inside” option in the product details, you’ll get a great idea of if the book is for you.I’m a total fan of these ‘Joe’s expert gardening guide’ books, I own three and I’ll be buying the rest.In case it’s not clear, the expert in the title is Joe Swift, not us! It’s not written for expert gardeners but for those who need a helping hand, or in this case maybe those who know their plants but need inspiration to do something different and new with their garden layout.
